Portugal being a catholic country, we have the tradition of visiting the cemeteries on November 1 to honour those who unfortunately are no longer with us. Since I've been living in Mexico I have gained a new admiration for the date that here it is called Dia de los Muertos, the day of the dead. This is the day where Mexicans celebrate the life of those who left. In each home you can find an altar in honor of a departed loved family member. They put the picture of the person, his favourite dishes, his favorite drinks his favorite objects, candles, decorations and almost always a pan de los muertos, bread of the dead which is sweet. People spend the night of the 31st in the cemeteries celebrating, singing, remembering those who are no longer with us. Children are given sweets including little skulls made of sugar (which may be a little gruesome for some, like my husband who received one with his name in it :))All is very positive and happy. Tomorrow we are invited to celebrate with the family of a very famous mexican actor who died many years ago but it is still being remembered through a huge altar in his honor. No horror movies or stories for us, I'm afraid. As for the book, The Night Circus, I actually own it. I also bought it after having read so much about it but somehow never got round to reading it, not yet anyway. After I read what you wrote this could change very soon...Marianoreply@blogger.com
